Perimenopause at 40? The Early Signs Most Women Miss
You’re in your early 40s — maybe even your late 30s — and something feels different. You can’t quite put your finger on it. Maybe your sleep has changed, your periods are a little unpredictable, or you’re feeling more anxious than usual for no clear reason.
You might chalk it up to being busy, stressed, or just getting older. But there’s a good chance your body is entering perimenopause — and most women don’t realise it’s happening until they’re well into it.
What Is Perimenopause, Exactly?
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause. It can begin anywhere from your mid-30s to your late 40s and typically lasts between four and ten years. During this time, your hormone levels — particularly oestrogen and progesterone — start to fluctuate more unpredictably, and it’s these fluctuations that drive the wide range of symptoms many women experience.
Unlike menopause (which is defined as 12 consecutive months without a period), perimenopause is a gradual shift. You’re still cycling, still ovulating at times, but things aren’t as consistent as they used to be.
The Early Signs Women Often Miss
Many women expect perimenopause to announce itself with hot flushes and missed periods. But the earliest signs are often far more subtle — and frequently mistaken for stress, ageing, or burnout:
· Increased anxiety or feelings of overwhelm that seem to come out of nowhere
· Waking between 2am and 4am and struggling to fall back asleep
· Heavier or more painful periods, or cycles that are shorter or longer than usual
· New or worsening PMS symptoms
· Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or memory lapses
· Low mood or feeling flat, even when life is going well
· Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
· Unexplained weight gain, especially around the midsection
· A noticeable drop in libido
· Joint aches and stiffness
If you’ve been told “it’s just stress” or “that’s normal for your age,” it may be worth digging a little deeper.
Why Perimenopause Often Goes Unrecognised
One reason perimenopause flies under the radar is that standard blood tests aren’t always helpful during this phase. Because your hormones are fluctuating so much, a single blood test might show “normal” results — even though you’re clearly symptomatic. Your levels might be completely different a week later.
This is why understanding the pattern of your symptoms, your cycle changes, and your overall health picture is so important. It’s also why many women feel dismissed when they visit their GP — the numbers might not tell the full story on the day they’re tested.
How a Naturopath Can Support You Through Perimenopause
Perimenopause doesn’t have to be something you just push through. There is so much that can be done to ease the transition, support your body through the hormonal shifts, and help you feel more like yourself again.
As a naturopath, I work with women in perimenopause to:
· Identify which hormones are shifting and how that’s impacting your body
· Support sleep quality using evidence-based herbal and nutritional medicine
· Balance mood and reduce anxiety naturally
· Manage cycle changes and reduce heavy or painful periods
· Support healthy weight management through diet and lifestyle strategies
· Reduce inflammation and support gut health, which directly impacts how your body processes hormones
· Work alongside your GP or specialist if you’re exploring HRT
The key is understanding that your symptoms are valid, that there are real solutions, and that you don’t have to wait until menopause to start getting support.
