What Your Blood Test Results Might Be Missing (And Why ‘Normal’ Isn’t Always Optimal)

You’ve probably had blood tests done before.

Your GP runs them, the results come back, and you’re told something along the lines of:

"Everything looks normal."

Which is reassuring… until you’re still feeling tired, foggy, struggling with your hormones, digestion, or wondering why your weight won’t shift.

This is where blood tests can sometimes be misunderstood.

Because there’s a difference between “normal” and “optimal.”

The Missing Piece in Blood Test Interpretation

Standard pathology ranges are designed to detect disease.

They answer questions like:

Is something seriously wrong?

But they don’t always answer the more nuanced question many people are actually asking:

Why don’t I feel my best?

Looking at blood tests through a more functional lens can help identify patterns that might otherwise be overlooked.

For example:

• Iron may be technically “in range” but still too low to support energy
• Thyroid markers might sit within reference range but not at levels that support optimal metabolism
• Vitamin D may be adequate for preventing deficiency but not ideal for immune or hormonal health
• Blood sugar or cholesterol patterns may reveal early metabolic shifts long before disease develops

These subtle patterns can provide helpful clues about what your body may be asking for.

Blood Tests Tell a Story (When You Look at Them Together)

Another common issue is that results are often reviewed marker by marker, rather than as a bigger picture.

When interpreted together, blood markers can reveal important relationships such as:

• Iron status and thyroid function
• Inflammation and cholesterol patterns
• Blood sugar regulation and hormone balance
• Nutrient levels and fatigue

Looking at the whole pattern often provides far more insight than focusing on a single number.

Common Markers That Are Often Worth Looking At More Closely

Some of the blood markers I commonly see that benefit from a deeper review include:

• Iron studies (ferritin, iron, transferrin saturation)
• Thyroid markers (TSH, Free T4, Free T3, antibodies)
• Vitamin D
• B12 and folate
• Cholesterol and lipid markers
• Blood sugar and insulin markers
• Inflammatory markers

These can provide valuable insight into areas such as energy, metabolism, hormones, fertility, and long-term health risk.

Why Conventional and Functional Interpretations Can Look Different

When your blood tests are reviewed in a conventional medical setting, the results are compared against reference ranges designed to identify disease. These ranges are often quite broad and are primarily used to determine whether something is significantly abnormal or requires medical treatment.

In naturopathic and functional health practice, we tend to look at blood markers through a slightly different lens. Rather than simply asking “Is this within the reference range?” we also ask “Is this level likely to support optimal health and how does it relate to the rest of the picture?”

This means looking at markers in relation to one another, identifying subtle patterns, and considering whether a result that technically falls within range may still be sitting at a level that could be contributing to symptoms such as fatigue, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, or changes in metabolism.

It’s not about replacing conventional interpretation, but adding another layer of insight that can help guide nutrition, lifestyle and targeted support.

When a Blood Test Review Can Be Helpful

A deeper review of your blood tests can be particularly helpful if:

• You’ve been told your results are “normal” but you still feel unwell
• You’re trying to understand ongoing symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, digestive issues, or hormone imbalances
• You want a more preventative view of your health
• You’d simply like someone to explain what your results mean in plain English
